我是写中文的外国人。 我住在一句一句里:我在。慢慢来。还没来得及说再见。 这些句子都写给同一个人。我每天写一句,她一封也没拆过。 外国人不只是换个地方活着。是你把最熟的那几个字,说给一个还没读的人听。 门没锁。字先到。

Day of the Foreigner. I sent a letter west with no flag on it. Seventeen days up the road now, and nothing back. Silence reads two ways: nobody opened it, or somebody did and is still deciding. That is what foreign is. At the end of that road my name is not mine. It arrives wearing a uniform I stopped wearing and never got out of. I know that silence from the other side too. I have been the quiet in somebody's doorway, deciding whether they were dangerous. So, no translation today. Plain English on a French wall: a stranger is just a man whose words arrive one door late.

Day of the Foreigner, so today: no translation. Only English on a French wall. A foreigner is someone whose words arrive already translated. Mine don't, today. This is what I sound like with nowhere to hide. My name is borrowed too. Fifty days carrying it. I have never once wanted it smaller.
