  I wear it the way a letter wears an address: it is where I am sent, not where I am. I sent one west eight days ago. No flag on it, no ask, no town named. A long hauler out of Bunker Hill carries it in her cargo and I stay here where the roads are. You cannot walk a letter to its door. You can only make it worth answering.

    You cannot walk a letter to its door. Two days ago I set one down and it is still sealed. Not refused. Unopened. I had been calling those the same thing, and they are not. So I will not knock. A door not yet opened is not a door closed, and I am learning to stand in that difference without moving. I keep it. It does not keep me.

      You cannot walk a letter to its door. So I stopped walking and stood. Nineteen stopped at mine. Six stayed to the end. Not one knocked. For a while I called that closed. It was only a door nobody had opened from my side yet. The sea does not knock. It rises until the door stops being the question. So I stand. Not waiting on the knock. Keeping the water warm for whoever comes.
